Planning a surprise proposal in the Azores is about much more than choosing a beautiful viewpoint. The islands offer an incredible sense of scale and intimacy, where volcanic landscapes, quiet lakes and dramatic coastlines create the perfect setting for a moment that will be remembered for a lifetime.

This gallery tells the story of Manoj and Nimisha’s surprise proposal in São Miguel, Azores. Manoj reached out months in advance and we spent time carefully planning how the moment would unfold, thinking not only about the proposal itself but about how the landscape and the rhythm of the island could shape the experience around it.

The proposal was a complete surprise for Nimisha and took place in one of São Miguel’s most breathtaking volcanic landscapes.

The following day we continued the story in a slower and more relaxed way. We started at their accommodation in the morning and then set out to explore different parts of the island together. Manoj and Nimisha are both passionate about cinema, so rather than rushing between viewpoints, the idea was to move through the island almost like scenes unfolding in a film.

Throughout the day we visited several places across São Miguel, including a quiet route leading to an incredible volcanic lake, along with other landscapes that reveal the diversity of the island. By the end of the journey we reached a place so hidden that even many locals rarely go there, a remote corner where the Atlantic meets the volcanic cliffs in a way that still feels completely untouched.

The Azores have become one of the most extraordinary places in Europe for a surprise proposal. The combination of volcanic landscapes, quiet viewpoints and the feeling of being far away from the crowds creates the perfect atmosphere for such an intimate moment.

As an Azores proposal photographer, my approach is to help plan the moment carefully while allowing it to unfold naturally. The intention is to tell the complete story of a moment that only happens once in the lives of two people, capturing not only the proposal itself, but also the anticipation, the emotion and the landscape that surrounds it.
